Liver is one of the most important orange in our body and function is very important for our health. While our liver does an excellent job at filtration, it might be over functioning because of the high toxic load that we are exposed to in modern society. Cleansing and detoxing the liver helps to clear pesticides, medication, heavy metals out of your system, resulting in a healthy liver. A liver cleanse or detox is a great way to do this.

When we talk about doing a detox we are referring to an age old naturopathic process of cleaning the blood. We do this by removing impurities from the blood in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination. The good news is that the liver has an incredible capacity to heal itself. Contrary to other organs, when a person has liver damage, the liver is able to regenerate tissue. Using a combination of nourishing, liver-healthy foods and liver-supporting ingredients, you can help protect your liver and allow it to do what it does best.

So in this blog, I want to share the some background information on importance of liver function, warning signs of liver problems, common liver diseases, risk factors and benefits of improving liver function and most important how to do a liver detox naturally at home using nutrition and natural remedies.

Before I start talking about the liver detox, lets discuss the importance of liver.

Liver is the second largest organ in the human body and is probably one of the most important organs. Liver has remarkable ability to rebuild itself. It has capability to restore itself in wise and function by regenerating damaged or even dead tissues. Liver is important due to many reasons. Some of the key functions it is involved in are immunity, metabolism, digestion, detoxification, production and storage of specific nutrients inside our body.

  • Abdominal pain (liver area)

  • Jaundice

  • Inflammation or

  • enlargement of liver

  • Fatigue, weakness, loss of

  • appetite, bloating,

  • constipation

  • Swelling in legs and ankles

  • High cholesterol levels

Liver disease and liver failure is the result of lot of scar tissue forming that the liver can no longer function. There are many different forms of liver disease and damage. Some of the most common types of liver diseases include:

1. Cirrhosis - which develops when scar tissue replaces the healthy cells in the liver. This can result in long-term damage of the liver that can lead to permanent scarring.

2. Alcoholic liver disease - The liver becomes damaged by excessive drinking because it is the primary site of ethanol (alcohol) metabolism.

3. Non-alcoholic fatty liver, when fat builds up in the liver. This type occurs more frequently with obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.

Step 2. Eat anti-inflammatory foods and choose organic

Our diet impacts how hard our liver works. Because the liver breaks down fats, converts protein and sugar and removes substances from the blood, it can become overwhelmed when it has too much to handle. Here are my Top 10 Liver Cleansing Foods:

  • GARLIC - contains selenium that helps to detoxify the liver.

  • CITRUS FRUITS - like grapefruit, oranges, limes and lemons all boost the liver’s cleansing ability.

  • CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES - like broccoli and cauliflower contain glucosinolate that helps the liver to produce detoxifying enzymes.

  • TURMERIC - helps the enzymes that flush out toxins and

  • contains antioxidants that repair liver cells.WALNUTS - provide support to natural liver cleansing.

  • BEETROOT - assist with increasing oxygen by cleansing the blood, and can break down toxic wastes.

  • APPLES - contain high levels of pectin that helps the body cleanse and release toxins from the digestive tract.

  • AVOCADOS - helps the liver rid itself of toxins.

Step 3: Use Liver Boosting Supplements.

Natural herbs have been used for centuries to help the liver metabolise chemicals found in prescription drugs, antibiotics, hormones and nutrients like proteins and fats. The following herbs are known to give the liver a boost in converting nutrients and removing toxins.

1. Milk Thistle - is an excellent source of antioxidants which helps fight liver disease.

2. Holy Basil - Holy basil contains essential oils that help combat bacteria, heavy metals and some strains of fungus.

3. Dandelion root - This helps balance fluid levels and boosts the liver’s efforts to quickly eliminate toxins, strengthening the immune system, helping with blood sugar balance and relieving indigestion.

4. Liquorice Root - is an anti-inflammatory properties and can help soothe gastrointestinal problems.

Step 4. Drink Warm Water with Lemon in the morning.

Drinking warm water with lemon in the morning helps to clear the digestive tract of toxins that have built up overnight. Lemon water contains antioxidants that help to stimulate the liver.

Step 5. De-stress and deal with emotional blockages.

A damaged liver tends to block healthy emotional flow, produce frustration and cause anger.

Find ways to remove stress from our day to day life using meditation and mindfulness.

Step 6. Stay active with moderate exercise.

Exercise improves circulation and improves cleansing activity in the body.

Exercise also helps blood and nutrients reach digestive organs, which is helpful for managing liver-related symptoms

Homeopathy offers excellent support in the detoxing process as the remedies stimulate the body’s own natural elimination. The homeopathic approach believes that the vital force or immune function can be disturbed by stress, chronic illness, environmental toxins, poor diet or consumption of chemicals in food or drugs. On top of this it allows for the rebuilding and strengthening of the immune system, and can be incorporated with other regimens without any conflict.

Homeopathic remedies reinforce the body’s natural ability to remove toxins and waste by-products without harmful side affects. The remedies are also capable of promoting health of damaged systems and restoration of proper functioning to sluggish or overactive systems, enabling the body to a state of balance and health.

How the remedies are selected for detoxing can be broadly divided into constitutional and organ specific. In constitutional prescribing the whole body is considered, and a tailor made remedy is selected after extensive case taking. This constitutional remedy alone may be all that is required to bring about the body’s innate ability to heal, repair, cleanse and restore. Other times there may be cause to further prescribe specific remedies to target individual organs or supporting systems.
